I am an entrepreneur, investor and advisor to dozens of businesses. I help entrepreneurs avoid typical new business pitfalls while advising them on how to raise capital, narrow their focus and eventually make a lot of money. My specialty is geospatial technology (GeoTech, GIS, geographic information systems) as I founded a company in that space in 1988 and sold it in 2006, but I focus largely in the mobile, software, apps and IT space.

Investor Presentations

You only get one chance to make a first impression. Your presentation to investors is the most important thing you will ever do. The first 30 seconds are critical - your whole idea can ride on how you greet a potential investor. Dealing with investors is not a walk in the park - it's swimming with very knowledgable sharks. You need to be prepared to talk with investors in person, on the phone and via presentation. Your mannerisms, poise and command of your subject are very important. You must know your financials and how (and why) you picked a pre-money valuation for your company. And, of course, you must know your subject in and out. A great presentation, whether in an elevator, an office or a boardroom will often determine if your company survives or not.

Working With Government Clients

I have a deep background in government as well as business. My business had many multi-year, multi-million dollar contracts with U.S. federal, state and local government agencies. You need to know how the game is played - it's not like working with private sector clients. There are many rules to follow and hoops to jump through. When working with government, what you don't know really can hurt you. The contracts can be large - huge, even - but it takes perseverance, patience and knowledge to win the one you want.
