I have been designing software and products for about 20 years. I am currently a Principal Designer with Guidea. I was previously Senior User Experience Fellow at Honeywell. I also acted as the creative director and Interaction Design Lead for connected home ecosystems, and I led the advanced design group creating offering stories of the future. I have been a designer in house, as a consultant, freelance, and with startups.

IX (pronounced ‘nine’) is one of the world-class interaction designers that I have been lucky enough to work with. We worked together in Microsoft’s Real Time Communication (RTC) group enhancing an under-production version and planning a fundamental redesign. IX works easily at • A business strategic level – pushing for the Live Meeting web interface to be included in the redesign because it is platform independent and the only way that a Mac user could join a meeting • A technical problem solving level – IX talked individually to all the technical specialists, reviewing direction with them and working with them to find solutions that enabled implementation of an excellent user experience • Producing designs in whatever format is necessary – IX produced white-board sketches for draft information architectures and UI components, drawings on paper, wireframes, widgets and full detailed interaction designs Ix is always user focussed, but not to the exclusion of implementation realities or business goals. Together we planned ethnographies to see Livemeeting used in the field. IX joined the observations and contributed to the analysis. I conducted a large open card-sort to build an understanding of users’ models of meetings and IX was able to use this users’ model of meetings to produce an Information Architecture fitted with their expectations, was intuitive, before it was even ready for iterative user testing.
IX is fun to work with, he smiles often and finds enthusiasm for all sorts of things, he encourages others to be creative and raises the spirits of a team to feel like they really own the user experience. I hope that one day I’ll get to work with him again.
I highly recommend IX. Working with IX on a project which was revolutionary for Quark, IX brought vital perspective and processes to the project. The impacts of his contributions are still felt today. IX is extremely competent both in analysis and design. He is also a very good people manager and savvy business manager, bringing trusted consultants into the project at critical times.
