I joined the OC Rollergirls shortly after Disco had founded the team. When I joined, there were perhaps 10 other girls (we didn't even have enough to bout!). I got to watch Disco build this team from virtually nothing to a full blown, professionally managed sports team. Roller Derby is not just a sport, it is a complete show. It is a show that requires constant and varied forms of entertainment throughout the bout, fundraising, developing top notch skill and talent of the players, costuming, sales and marketing, promoting the bout, selling tickets, coordination between the two opposing team (oftentimes OC would host a visiting league from out of town), massive promotion of the event prior to the bout, working with the media (both prior to the event and during the event), organizing the halftime show, live entertainment, making sure sound, technology, lighting and staging (setting up a track from scratch each time) was perfectly set up, preparing the announcers with all the skater information - the list simply goes on and on and on. On top of that, she also managed all the league business - the financial aspects, accounting, media relations, league operations, She gave us opportunities for additional team building events, and had to lead the league through intense periods of disagreements and people who wanted to sabotage what she was doing. Most admirable about Disco was that she always, always took the higher road and insisted that we be the "bigger person" despite the circumstances. She never spoke poorly of others and asked us to follow her ethics. The image of the league was paramount to her and she wanted this to truly be a league with a strong, high reputation for being skilled, professional, upstanding who was devoted to giving back to the community via fundraising for Breast Cancer.
Disco went from having minimal knowledge about how to put on this kind of a show to being able to oversee, manage and direct everyone on the league to putting on a show that many would call some of the best entertainment you will find in Orange County. The fans are devoted, her skaters are loyal and Disco has a reputation in the derby world as putting on one of the best bouts they have ever seen.
