I had the distinct privilege of working directly for Gulam at the FOCUS International Coordinating Committee for 2 years. Gulam was a great mentor and coach, and I thoroughly enjoyed my time at FOCUS working for him. He continually challenged me to excel in my thinking and approach, provided constructive feedback on my work and style, and continually provided me unique opportunities to succeed. His thinking from a corporate governance, corporate social responsibility, and humanitarian aid perspective are incredibly strong. Through osmosis, I inculcated his thinking in these areas, and they have stuck since then. Lastly, and most important, Gulam has the unique ability to develop genuine relationships with his colleagues that transcend the office place.
