Hi there!

I'm a freelance writer and journalist who has carved out a steady, and exciting career out of doing what interests me (and getting paid for it) over the past few years.

I quit my 9-5 to pursue the work that most invigorates me —
talking to, and writing about, my favorite music artists.

Topics we can cover: • starting out as a writer, • pitching to publications (and how to find editors), • balancing a freelance lifestyle or side-hustle, • how to generate writing ideas, reporting and the mechanics of good review and feature writing.

* I also work in marketing and press relations for a publication, so I'd be happy to talk about those topics, too. My focus in writing is in the arts and music.

Colin Smith is a journalist, musician, and communications specialist who works with artists, nonprofits, publications, and even music businesses. His days are often split between writing music features or reviews and implementing creative marketing strategies — and his nights are often spend working or recording music. He has managed marketing for arts non-profit Silk Road Rising, and he worked in a communications and editorial capacity for Illinois Humanities, Chicago Artists Coalition, The News Literacy Project, Newcity magazine, and more.
