How do mobile applications that are completely free (do not charge to download or for monthly subscriptions) generate revenue?

Answering as follows -

1. Apps that do not charge upfront usually draw their revenues from the advertisements.

2. The advertisement process is not something that you manage (unless you've your own ad engine), but you use third party Ad SDKs like Google admob or revmob etc as an integrated service on your app. They don't need your app to be famous before they show their ads, but they start rendering ads as soon as you've 1st user and ads are either based on location or context or user-type or a combination of all of these parameters. So you need not to sell your advertisement space to anyone manually at all, these Ad SDKs (software development kits) do take care of that and ofcourse take their cut.

3. You can, however, think of selling your ad space manually by contacting businesses via various methods once you are actually famous and have meaningful number of active users. You can do so simultaneously with the ongoing Ad SDks. People also use more than one Ad SDKs depending upon their app type and spaces available.

4. The categories you mentioned like gaming, travel and social are actually good in terms of rendering ads. The gaming being on the top.

In gaming, you can not only do contextual or locational ads but also tie up with other games to do cross-app ads, like they advertise your app on their game and when user installs your app they pay them game credits and vice versa. There are several services who facilitate such cross app promotions also smoothly.

The earning depends upon several factors again, starting from number of active users to their time spent on the app daily, then location, then frequency of adds (how many times you show your ads to one single user per session) and so on. But bottom line is the more number of " Active users" (not just the ones who've downloaded) you've the better earnings you'll receive. It can be as low as $ 100 per month or may go beyond 10 K per month.

There are various studies about the ad revenue, and many people say if you show 50 K banner ads per day (to any number of users, 10 K users or less or more) then you'll easily earn $ 75 to 100 per day. Video ads get more click through and therefore more revenue.

1. Hire a development instead of an individual, companies are more accountable, have teams, fall back plans and can handle multiple technologies and tasks (like design, front end, backend and so on).

What is better for your startup - native or hybrid app development?

Knowledge source:- I run an app dev agency creating apps for statups since 2010, have been principal supervisor to more than 100 app projects so may know a thing or two about technology and app market.

Go for native (even if one platform):-
1. If your App is a fresh new product (unlike an extension of existing popular website on mobile) and getting early adopters (your future evangelists) is important than any other thing.
2. If you care about first impression on users in terms of app's performance, speed, competitive UI.
3. If you know that getting popular one 1 platform only at first is enough to go further in the market with new high quality versions, for ex. Instagram was iOS only, so as whatsapp didn't launch on all platforms on day 1, even the clarity App is on iOS only for now.
4. If you believe that instead of targeting many platforms with an inferior product, it is better to target one at a step with a superior native app.
5. If your app is no banking app that has many security layers compelling it to go via web route.
6. If you know even facebook tried hybrid and cross platform for long and then finally switched on native ones because of the inferior user experience of latter which was causing them revenue loss from advertisements.
7. If you want your app to be well optimized in terms of memory and resource consumption, should take best advantage of native features and capabilities.
8. And if you know that "creating an hybrid app and creating a "good quality comparable" hybrid app" are two different efforts and the latter one would ultimately "COST" you as good as you'd pay for "Two native apps" development; while the former is mostly "nice to have".
9. If you know that your end user is not bothered about how many source codes are you maintaining and how you update each app at all, and all they look for is a superior experience which an hybrid app can never offer.

Go for hybrid or cross-platform:-
1. If your product is already popular on other platforms like web or Android (or iOS) and you just want to extend its reach by launching another platform tweaking the web technologies.

2. If you really believe "doing it quick" is more important than "doing it right".

3. If you want to bypass native controlled environment for any additional benefit (can elaborate more later).

4. If you have no easy access or budget to hire native developer (though hybrid web experts also charge same on equal experience).

5. If you know web technologies yourself and having to incur no development cost (even in that case I'd suggest you to utilize your web skills in creating the backend and web front end (responsive) of your system but as soon as you need an app then go native.

Bottom line; a Native App is more "focused" towards its end user while an hybrid one is mostly a decision influenced by creator's own dynamics and choices and priorities.

What is the minimum number of hours it would take to code an OpenTable app in appearance, features, and function?

Knowledge source:- I'm an app developer myself (heading app development company www.agicent.com.

I believe you understand that an App like OpenTable basically has 3 major parts;
1. one is the end user App that you see on the front end on iOS or Android, (native)
2. Another is an App or a web portal for restaurant owners to receive and confirm bookings, see orders etc.
3. and a Backend that you don't see (which has the DB, APIs, business logic, Admin panel, reports etc).

So broadly breaking up these modules, I can do this project as follows:-

1. Minimum 60 to 80 hours for all UI design.
2. 350 hours for iPhone App for end user
3. 250 hours for An app (iPhone or android or web) for the restro owners.
4. Minimum 400 hours for the backend (DB design, API, admin panel with basic features).
5. An overall 150 hours of QA for each module.
6. Take a buffer of 10 % minimum.

These hours also include the research and planning on technology, third party libraries to use, and interim releases (at least 10 for both apps and admin etc) for your testing.

To get this done you need to have a great tech. architect cum supervisor who shall oversee and decide on everything, very good developers for iOS and Android (at least 1 senior + 1 assistant each), and a DB programmer and one Web developer (for admin panel), and a critical QA.

The actual release time of this whole thing could be:-
1. 3 months from scratch to one App (end user) and backend (without Admin panel).
2. Another 1 month for restro owners' app (or site)
3. Another 1 month for admin panel release and to finish everything.

While an offshore app development agency like mine would charge somewhere around $ 20-25 K for this project, the same in the USA would charge you 5-6 times, while the same in freelancers world could be done in like even less than 5 K (but that won't be what opentable is).

What are important qualities that a startup developer should have?

Well, I'm an app developer myself and worked with many startups (as developer for hire) and also run my own app agency, so this is what I believe:-

1. A startup developer should be aware of the real implication of his code and also the target user group; he must know the sensitivity of rolling quality builds quickly; and its direct impact on business.

2. He should be an "engineering" mind and not just "coder" who can't think beyond their technology stack. He should always be concerned about the next generation of technologies and be ready to take the challenge for staying on edge of competition.

3. A little entrepreneurial attitude (at least ownership, accountability, time management) is always important.

And that's it, rest can be managed or fine tuned if attitude and approach is right.

I've personally experimented with my developers and figured that if you just change the "approach" with which they take the work and give them little more sense of "ownership" (combined with offering tangible incentives of success) their whole efficiency goes to another level and also the outcome product becomes better.

It depends upon whether you're going to have your own chat server hosted or use a ready framework (like firebase etc), the UI part is not very costly nor the front end functionality but the whole technology in the background.

Do motivational quote apps on the App Store marketplace have potential for success?

Everyone likes or needs quotes at one point or another of their pro/ personal life.

My experience - I develop apps for people like you, and own this App development company www.agicent.com, and here's my take specific to your question:-

There is a potential, but you need to offer "either the same thing in different way" or "different thing in different/ same way" w.r.t what's already there in the market. It could be some associated new features along with quotes, or something more personalized offerings (based on mood etc), and ofcourse with some "FRESH" content. May be you allow users to put their quotes also, and publish to community for vote up/ down etc.

Also,don't miss the most important aspect (that many in this business miss) of rolling out new features frequently, and engage customer proactively (by fb groups, notifications, analysing their data and suggesting them something, allowing them to contribute to the app by blog/ comments etc). Basically, a sense of "community" needs to be achieved, and then you can figure out many revenue intersections (when you've great no. of Daily Active users).

Some common revenue streams are advertisements, in-app purchases (of any premium content etc) or even 1 time fee. Some little uncommon could be gaining sponsorship from business related to what you offer (for example book publishers, therapy providers etc, whoseover thinks their target user group uses your app).

How much does it cost a developer to white label an app w/ only minor branding changes done? Basically, none of the code structurally changes.

It depends.

if minor branding changes mean = changing the logo, putting new labels then its not a job of more than couple of hours (or even lesser than that).

If minor branding = logo change, change of whole skin, layout then it can be a little longer job.

It also depends upon what kind of contract you have with the App developer, like if they cover this "white labeling part" already in the cost or its a new demand from your side.
